Milo woke up yesterday grinning from ear to ear, so delighted was he that the Colorado Rockies would be playing in the very first World Series game in franchise history. Milo has been a Rockies fan since day 1, as he emerged from the womb right around the time the Rox began the winning streak that propelled them into the post-season.
(Incidentally, Milo's football loyalties remain a subject of heated dispute around these parts. However, in light of the Broncos' generally uninspiring play, balanced against Brett Favre's record-setting and possibly final season and my own focus on baseball, Steve has taken the upper hand in gridiron fan-grooming for 2007.)
To pass the time before the first pitch was thrown out, Milo hung out with Grandma S-J, who - hipster grandma that she is - took him for a walk in the Beco.
Steve and I decided to keep our standing Wednesday night climbing date, while Grandma S-J and Grandpa Bill hung out with Milo at our house (so they could watch the game on our TV, of course). Their text-message updates started out optimistic ("3-1 Bos. after two!"), grew shorter ("still 6-1"), and petered out into deafeatist ("Awful").
When we got home, right around the Seventh Inning Stretch, Grandma S-J had changed Milo into pajamas, having decided that his exuberant outfit might have jinxed the Rockies' performance.
(Alas, the Red Sox had scored another handful of runs after the change. Perhaps Grandma should have swapped out her own NL Champions t-shirt for some Pooh jammies)
Long before the game hit the books, Milo, wisely, called it a night.
He remains ever optimistic, however, and greeted today full of excitement for Game 2. Here, he offers a few choice gestures to Red Sox Nation. (Rockies in 6!)
Milo is SUCH a cutie-pie!
